Remember that classic quote from the 1970’s ad campaign: “Is it real or is it Memorex”? The idea was that the quality of the audio tape was supposedly so good that you couldn’t tell whether you were listening to a live performance or one that was pre-recorded-it so captured the essence of high-fidelity sound.
Maybe that memory evokes a chuckle. When we consider how far we have come in advancing technology, often blurring the lines between reality and simulation, the notion of questioning the authenticity of sound reproduction seems kind of quaint and nostalgic. In this new age of AI, deepfakes, and virtual reality, a more profound question of far greater gravity is being posed: “Is it real or is it Artificial Intelligence?”
It’s a thought-provoking question that makes us consider the essence of authenticity and question the veracity of what we actually see and hear. The age-old adage “seeing is believing” is no longer relevant. In recent days, I have come across videos that exemplify this shift. These clips feature seemingly authentic individuals in convincingly realistic settings that are entirely fabricated, delivering messages that appear completely genuine – but lack any semblance of truth. And in many cases, you cannot tell the difference. It’s alarming. And it’s just the beginning.
Is it real, or is it AI?
As technology continues to advance exponentially, distinguishing AI-generated outputs from reality will become more and more challenging. People will find it difficult, if not impossible, to trust or believe in the authenticity of any information, art, or interactions that appear human – but are created by AI.
Why is this important?
It’s important because truth matters. Reality matters. Authenticity and integrity are not obsolete.
Ironically, I asked AI that very question, “why does it matter?”. Here’s the answer it gave me. And it’s spot-on.
“The authenticity and genuineness of information, experiences, and interactions hold significant importance for several reasons:
“Truth and Integrity: Honesty and truthfulness are fundamental values in many ethical, moral, and religious beliefs. Authenticity promotes trust and integrity in relationships and societies.“
Accountability: Knowing what is real and genuine allows individuals to take responsibility for their actions. In contrast, fake or AI-generated content might lead to misinformation or manipulation, hindering accountability.
“Human Dignity: Acknowledging reality and genuine experiences respects the inherent worth and dignity of individuals. Fake content can undermine personal autonomy and dignity by distorting perceptions of reality.
“Spiritual Growth: In religious contexts, truth and authenticity are often considered pathways to spiritual growth and enlightenment. Authenticity in beliefs and practices fosters a deep connection with divine truths.
“Ethical Decision-Making: Making ethical decisions requires accurate information and a clear understanding of reality. Fake or AI-generated content can mislead individuals and organizations, leading to unethical choices and actions.
“In conclusion, recognizing and valuing the difference between what is real and genuine versus what is fake and AI-generated is crucial for upholding ethical principles, preserving moral standards, and nurturing spiritual well-being.“
Jesus warned His followers, “See to it that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4) cautioning us to beware of deception by false prophets and teachings. He urged us to exercise vigilance and discernment as we face the cacophony of voices and the barrage of ideas that aim to distract us and sway us from the Truth.
But how do we do that? How can we know what’s real and what isn’t? How can we distinguish truth from deception?
How can we know what’s real and what isn’t? How can we distinguish truth from deception?
I think there is only one way, and it begins with the conviction that there really IS such a thing as objective truth. And it means holding on to that truth with unwavering determination and fierce tenacity. We need to grab hold of the truth that we already know like we never have before. The Word of God remains true and is our only anchor in these challenging times!
The Word of God! The unadulterated Word! Not man’s teaching of the Word! Not videos of our favorite popular preacher on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or TicToc …. because unfortunately, even that can be – and is being – altered and manipulated by AI.
No, our standard, our plumb line, our reference point, our center must always only be the Word of God! We need to learn it! We need to know it! We need to consume and digest it! We need to memorize it! We need to hide it in our hearts! We need to live it! We are clearly in the final seconds of time as we have known it, and the Bible speaks of great deceptions, and a great delusion in the last days. (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12).
So be alert! Be vigilant and discerning so that you are not deceived! “Do your best to present yourself to God as one … who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Allow God’s Word to be for you exactly what He intended it to be: a lamp to guide your feet and a light to direct your path. And may the Holy Spirit living in you always bear witness to the Truth!
